This year some lucky person will get to go to Web Directions North for free, from anywhere in the world. Join our affiliates program and it could be you.

Here's how it works. Get in touch with us and we'll set you up as an affiliate. Use your affiliate link, and our badges, to spread the word about the conference.

Anyone who refers 4 people who sign up for the conference (we track them with cookies and associated internet magic), gets themselves a free ticket -- but that's only the beginning.

In early January we'll draw an affiliate at random who will get not just their ticket to the conference, but also their flight and 3 nights accommodation, covered by us, from anywhere in the World.

We'll also draw 3 other runners up who will each get a ticket to the conference, whether they've referred 4 people or not.

We also have great books by many of our speakers to give away too - so there's plenty of opportunity to win.

Anyone who joins the affiliate program and sends a few hits our way is in the running to win big -- so, get in touch today, start spreading the word, and you could be on your way to Vancouver this January.

As part of an ongoing plan to make more of its data available in a variety of formats, the ABS is working to enable users to generate their own tables from raw statistical data and then present the information using maps.
The US Government has long had the policy (in fact the constitutional obligation I believe) to open its data sources, which has given rise to amazing mashups like these from a speaker at our first Web Directions North, Ducky Sherwood. I'm sure there'll be many developers raring to get their hands on this data and do likewise for Australia. So, I think this is sensational news. At a recent presentation to Government Developers and other web folk in Victoria, I floated the idea of an API Czar, responsible for opening up government databases and data sources to public use, mashups and so on.The ABS is surely the lead Government organization to start what will hopefully become an avalanche of government data available for developers to get their hands on." If you're looking to work at the true cutting edge of social media and the web, this is a fantastic opportunity. The museum is looking to fill two developer roles, one working specifically on the Collections Australia Network (CAN) project, and the other on a new experimental project called About NSW.Both roles involve developing next generation web services for large datasets and have a great deal of scope for creative experimentation. The Collections Australia Network (CAN) role involves the continued development of a national collections database portal as well as cultural tourism site. CAN works across the Australian museums, galleries, libraries and archives sector and there is a huge pool of data waiting to be explored, visualised, and made more useful. CAN runs on a custom CMS built with PHP and PostgreSQL.The About NSW position involves developing cross-government ‘mashups’ - pulling together data from multiple sources using harvesting and scraping methods and APIs, to create new services that mix this government content with museum data. The About NSW project runs on Plone CMS, but has a lot of room for experimental visualisation and mashup work outside of Plone. The museum is a PHP shop but there is scope within these projects for experimentation with Ruby on Rails. Both roles are based on a 35hr working week (rather than the 35 hr day that you might be more used to) and have flexible working conditions. Wig meets Web (2.0): harnessing the law to commercialise and protect your IP

Session description

Innovation and development in web 2.0 moves ever faster, the law as slow as always. So how can you best harness the law in commercializing and protecting your intellectual property? Scott tackles some of the thorny issues web content creators face in commercializing and protecting the IP in their content and ventures into the controversial territory of accessing the creative power of customers through user-generated content. Ben draws on his experience advising Virgin companies in a range of industries and countries to explore the practical issues facing businesses trying to protect their IP. He also looks at some of the dilemmas – and possible solutions – for businesses using user-generated content. Both promise not to wear a tie.

About Scott Buchanan and Ben Maguire

Scott Buchanan PortraitScott Buchanan is the passionate founder of Buchanan Law and experienced IP, IT and telecommunications lawyer. Ben apologises, but he is a notorious Luddite: he is not on Facebook, does not write a blog, has no idea how a style sheet works, and only recently learned what itunes does. Instead, he swims. He clearly spends too much time face down in cold water, having recently swum the English Channel.

In the case of the built environment, it's about complying with building codes. On the web it's about meeting WCAG level A or double A or so one. But it's really about people. And as tough as we might think complying with these criteria is, think about how tough not complying makes other people's lives. This is a moving an powerful story from a woman who found herself confined to a wheel chair after an aircraft accident last year.
I first became aware of this harsh truth when I made a trip to a Perth department store with Michael and my father to buy a birthday present for a friend. I left feeling utterly dejected, in no doubt about my new reality. The store's aisles in the book section, for example, were so narrow there was no way I could manoeuvre the wheelchair around them. In the food department, the counters were so high I could not see over them to the sales staff, and I found myself at eye level with young children holding onto their mothers' skirts. Here I was, an independent 34-year-old woman whose entire adult life thus far had involved many hours in shops buying clothes, make-up, browsing for books and CDs, and now I felt completely shut out of consumer society.
I think keeping in mind stories like these when we address our tasks as developers and designers makes us much better at what we do."
