the World Wide Web Foundation

Sir Tim Berners-Lee has announced a new organization, the World Wide Web Foundation, whose goals are

  • to advance One Web that is free and open
  • to expand the Web’s capability and robustness
  • to extend the Web’s benefits to all people on the planet

Clearly the foundation is meant to complement the technical role of the W3C, although the second goal positions the Foundation as an umbrella organization to the now more than decade old W3C.

With the Foundation only launched two days ago, it is clearly very early days. But an orgaization to act as a custodian for the vision (and reality) that Sir Tim Berners-Lee founded the web to be, helmed by the man himself, is a very welcome initiative.

  1. Is there anyone local who can do a short pitch about the WWWF at WDS08? Five minutes should be enough — and they’d certainly be addressing the right crowd…

  2. Hi Mark,

an excellent suggestion. I’ll see whether Mike Smith is in a position to say anything about it.
