Web Directions South 2008 survey closes

maxine

Thanks so much to the 85 people who took the time to share with us your thoughts on content for Web Directions South 2008. There are lots and lots of interesting new ideas in there - check out the spreadsheet here. In particular it was great to hear about a whole host of interesting Australian projects. Case studies from people who worked on things like this are the hidden gems of any conference in my experience, so we’re really looking forward to having a bunch of those in Sydney in September this year.

This afternoon I’m going to print the spreadsheet out and start making sense of it all. As mentioned, if you’d like to share your thoughts about the conference this year, John and I will be around this Campfire chat tomorrow between about 10am and 2pm AEST. Come by - we have guest access turned on, so you don’t need an account. See you then.

Looking forward to the conference Maxine - can’t wait till registration opens. I contributed to the spreadsheet but just came across this conference http://www.seedconference.com/ and was insanely jealous of anyone that could get to Chicago for it. Would love someone ;-) to do something like that down here. Would go just for Jason Fried.

Yeah, that’s a really slick site for the Seed conference, and I’d love to be be able to say we were holding our conference in a building designed by Mies Van Der Rohe. And I’m sure it’s going to be a fantastic day. Having said all that though, I can’t help but baulk at the fact that all 6 of the presenters are men. Sure sure, they just found the best people for what they wanted to talk about yadda yadda yadda ad nauseum, but as a woman I take one look at that and say “total blokefest, I think I’ll stay at home”. Maybe I’m alone, but I don’t think I am :)

One of the issues that I was thinking of when doing my submission was: there is a limited number of speaker slots in a program (28 over two days - 2 streams).

That’s not a lot of free space for new speakers when you take out keynotes and local major players etc and then consider the ones that you want to see on the program. In fact it comes down to just a few slots per day that could end up being filled will new speakers.

Then you get the problem that you don’t want to nominated person X because you don’t what to have them push out another speaker that you “really” want to hear.

Why is building the program lineup so hard. :) Major hat tip to you guys on opening up this.
