The Commons — folksonomy meets the Library of Congress

One of our most popular speakers last year, George Oates of Flickr, writes in detail today about a collaboration between the Library of Congress (the US National Library), and Flickr to enable anyone to tag the Library’s photographic collection.

For now it’s a pilot project of about 1500 photos, but hopefully this will be greatly extended in future. You can read more at Flickr, and the Library of Congress blog.

  1. On a similar vein (crowdsourcing meets established institution), the National Library of Australia has a project allowing Flickr users to contribute their own photos to the Picture Australia collection: http://www.pictureaustralia.org/
